Agree. Here’s where I am at on Fu (this is probably a hear
me out situation).
He makes it difficult - for me at least - to not root for him. Seems like a good guy, by all accounts a good husband and dad, and at least in a setting like this, says most of the right things.
I’m starting to think some of what we see as poor decision making may be him knowing he is behind from a resources and talent perspective and pressing in certain situations to make up that difference. Yes he is responsible for that talent that is on the roster but still means we can acknowledge we are behind.
I think he was always going to be learning his first Power 5 job here. I believe most looked at TCU with its great offense and Andy Dalton and the turnaround at Memphis and Paxton Lynch and thought he was more of a finished product than he probably really was. Couple that with the success from the 1st first year and you have expectations that don’t match up to capability (at least on the front end).
Ultimately the 3 things I think will doom him here are recruiting, roster management, and his loyalty to staff that may not be up to the challenge of their jobs. However, the reason I think he is still here and given some grace is the AD wasn’t where it should have been when he arrived and he wasn’t where he needed to be when he arrived and that is somewhat of an (unspoken) understanding between he and Whit.
I hope he succeeds here but may have dug too big of a hole thus far.
